The Forgetting Curve:

The concept of enhancing knowledge transfer and improving retention gets complicated because of The Forgetting Curve!

There have been hundreds of studies and research done on memory and learning retention.  One of the most fundamental of these early studies was done by a German Psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885.

He found that after learning new information, the retention of that information decays over time.  More specifically, he found that one hour following the event, only 44.2 % of the information was retained, a day later 33%, two days later just 27.8% and 6 days later only about 25% remains.

No matter how well we design, create and deliver our content or message you cannot overcome the impact of the Forgetting Curve during the training event. However, if you focus on what happens after they walk out that door you have an opportunity to minimize the effects.

Learning vs. Training:
It is important to make the distinction between training and learning. Learning is not an “event “ but a “process.”

For example, you might attend a classroom session on the subject of Presentation Skills. We would call that training and it is a discrete event. It happens on Wednesday from 8am to 4pm in Building 4162, Room 145. Another example would be an online course on Diversity. While not tied to a specific time or location, the training is a discrete event.  There is a defined amount of content that is presented in the course.

So there are two examples of training. In our model, you can see Training depicted below.

But as important as what happens in the Training event are those things that happen before and after the Training. Coupled with what actually happens during the Training event, these three phases combine to create the Learning Process. Unlike Training, Learning is not a discrete event but a series of events and activities that happen Before, During and After Training.
